    Drugs used during preterm labor

The drugs that are most commonly used are betamethasone and magnesium sulfate. The reason betamethasone is used, or another one would be dexamethasone, is because it stimulates the fetal lung maturation. This helps the baby breathe better. In addition to that, it helps release the surfactant in the babys lungs. This is why these meds are very important. What goes hand in hand with antenatal glucocorticoids are tocolytics like magnesium sulfate because it suppresses utero activity.
